Abstract
After the recognition of product development as a central and very important area for business success of industrial companies, many engineering schools have established courses on product development. This paper touches the problems of creating meaningful practice oriented curricula seen in the light of traditions of teaching, problems with space for more topics, and the dynamic development and change of industrial conditions and approaches. It seems, that the current evolution of these courses is insufficient, to free them of a machine design tradition, to obtain a new comprehensiveness, or to give the background for handling dynamic changes in industry.
