Abstract

All products have a structure, but what is actually structure and what is seen as a good structure? We try to answer these questions by looking upon the basics of product structure, the domain theory and the chromosome Model. The concept of architecture, which today has so many interpretations, is introduced, and by relating it to the chromosome model, different types and principles of architecture are identified. Modularisation is based upon a certain type of architecture, the modular architecture. Modelling of such an architecture for product families is introduced and its relation to configuration highlighted. As a cinclusion product modelling's role for future design is estimated.
