Abstract
The optimal transfer of product development knowledge varies with the user's expertise and his or her situation. This is why advanced navigation, searching and filtering possibilities are necessary for selecting appropriate documents. These can only be realized by using a suitable classification for the knowledge domain. Creating such a classification scheme is not a trivial task, but has to be fulfilled carefully. To best match the user's needs, we tried to identify their mental structure of product development knowledge by an ordering test. By this, we specified a classification scheme with the three criteria "object or process knowledge", "methodological category" and "degree of abstraction". This classification scheme was evaluated in a second test, where some problems have been detected. Hence, we established an additional classification of the documents or rather their contents, which are used for the knowledge transfer. A combined use with the classification of the knowledge facilitates a compromise between easy handling at the configuration side and good support at the user side.
